Patients can pay by bank from your payment portal using a new or saved bank account. Here's what the patient sees at each step.
Pay with a new bank account
In the payment portal, the patient selects the Pay by Bank toggle.
The patient selects Use a new bank account.
The ACH authorization disclosure ("By connecting your bank account you are authorizing debits to your account for any amount owed for use of our services and/or purchase of our products, until you revoke this authorization.") is shown. The patient must check the box to activate the Pay Now button.
The patient clicks Pay Now and is redirected to a Plaid-hosted page.
Plaid asks for the patient's phone number (optional). The patient can also click Continue without a phone number.
On the Select your institution page, the patient searches for or selects their bank (for example, Chase, Bank of America, or Wells Fargo).
A reCAPTCHA verification step appears before the bank login.
The patient is redirected to their bank's own login page and enters their online banking username and password. The bank confirms it will not share credentials with Plaid or PbN.
The patient selects the account to debit (checking or savings) and confirms. Plaid completes the connection, and the payment is submitted to the ACH network.
The patient returns to the payment portal, which shows Payment Success! with the total paid and a Download Receipt option.
The patient receives an email and/or SMS confirming the practice received the payment.
Pay with a saved bank account
The patient selects the Pay by Bank toggle.
The patient selects their saved bank account. If they have more than one, all saved accounts are listed and they choose one for this payment.
The patient checks the authorization box.
The patient clicks Pay Now.
Each saved account has a trash icon to remove it. Setting a default bank account isn't currently supported.
Add a bank account from the Patient Portal
Patients can also add a bank account as a payment method directly from their Patient Portal.
Security
PbN does not store or access the patient's bank login credentials at any time. Plaid and the patient's bank handle all bank authentication. The bank's own login page states that credentials will not be shared.
Why the authorization box is required
This is a NACHA regulatory requirement. The patient must explicitly authorize the debit before any bank connection or payment is started.
