Understanding Cancellations and No-Shows in Curve

Written by Alyssa Elso

To ensure accurate reporting in Practice by Numbers, it is important to properly mark canceled and no-show appointments in Curve.

Follow the steps below when updating an appointment's status:

  1. Open the Appointment in Curve: Locate the appointment on the Curve schedule and right-click on it.

  2. Update the Appointment Status: From the appointment details, update the appointment to the appropriate status:

    1. Cancel – for appointments canceled before the scheduled visit.

    2. Missed – for patients who do not arrive for their scheduled appointment

  3. Save Your Changes: Save the appointment after updating the status.

How Practice by Numbers Interprets These Statuses

Practice by Numbers uses Curve's appointment status to classify appointment outcomes.

Using the correct status ensures your scheduling reports accurately distinguish between appointments that were canceled in advance and patients who did not show up.

Why This Matters

Practice by Numbers relies on the appointment status in Curve to calculate scheduling and appointment KPIs.

Using the correct status helps your practice accurately track:

  • Cancellation rates

  • Failed (no-show) appointment rates

  • Scheduling trends over time

  • Overall appointment performance

Keeping appointment records rather than removing them ensures that Practice by Numbers has the data needed for accurate reporting.

Best Practices

  • Use Canceled when a patient notifies your office that they will not be attending their appointment.

  • Use Missed when a patient fails to arrive for their scheduled appointment.

  • Update the appointment status rather than deleting the appointment whenever possible. This preserves the appointment history and ensures reporting remains accurate.
