Understanding Payment Method Breakdown Charts

Written by Alyssa Elso

The Payment Method Breakdown charts provide a visual overview of how your practice collects payments. By showing revenue across payment channels, card types, and card networks, these charts help you better understand patient payment behavior and identify trends in how collections are being received.

Whether you're evaluating online payment adoption, monitoring debit versus credit card usage, or reviewing card network distribution, these charts offer quick insights into your collected revenue.

Why These Charts Matter

Understanding how patients prefer to pay can help your practice:

  • Measure adoption of online versus in-office payment options

  • Identify trends in credit and debit card usage

  • Better understand payment processing activity

  • Evaluate the impact of payment collection strategies

  • Gain additional visibility into payment performance over time

These charts are designed to provide a high-level view of payment activity and complement the collection metrics available throughout the Payments Dashboard.

Where to Find the Payment Method Breakdown Charts

  1. Navigate to Payments from the left-hand menu.

  2. Select Summary.

  3. Scroll below the Patient AR Distribution section.

The three Payment Method Breakdown charts appear side by side in a single row.

Understanding the Three Charts

ECOM vs POS

This chart shows how collected payment volume is divided between online and in-person payment methods.

ECOM (E-Commerce)

Includes payments collected through:

  • Payment requests

  • Payment links

  • Patient Payment Portal transactions

POS (Point of Sale)

Includes payments collected through:

  • In-office card terminals

This chart can help you understand how much of your collected revenue comes from digital payment channels compared to payments taken at the practice.

Credit vs Debit

This chart shows the distribution of collected revenue between credit card and debit card transactions.

Credit

Payments processed using credit cards.

Debit

Payments processed using debit cards.

Note: This chart only includes credit and debit card transactions. Other payment types, such as cash or ACH payments, are not included. This view can help practices understand which types of cards patients use most frequently.

Card Networks

This chart breaks down collected payment volume by card network.

Supported networks include:

  • Visa

  • Mastercard

  • American Express (Amex)

  • Others (including Discover and Diners Club)

This chart provides insight into the card brands most commonly used by your patients.

How to Read the Charts

Each chart is displayed as a donut chart with a corresponding legend.

For each segment, you'll see:

  • Total dollars collected

  • A visual progress bar showing proportional volume

  • The percentage of total collected revenue represented by that segment

This allows you to quickly compare payment methods and identify the largest contributors to your collections.

What Time Period Is Displayed?

All three Payment Method Breakdown charts reflect data from the same 24-month period used by the Collected card at the top of the Payments Summary Dashboard.

Important

These charts are not affected by any date filters applied elsewhere on the dashboard. As a result, the values shown may differ from other dashboard widgets that support custom date filtering.

Special Cases and Chart Behavior

Depending on your transaction history, you may notice the following behavior:

Zero-Volume Categories

If a category has no collected revenue, it will not appear in the chart or legend.

Single Category Data

If only one category contains transaction volume, the donut chart will display as a complete circle.

No Transaction Data

If no qualifying transaction data exists, an empty-state message will be displayed.

Card Network Display

The Card Networks chart only displays networks with recorded transaction volume.

Networks without activity will not appear in the chart.

Important Notes

  • Data is sourced from the same transaction records used by the Collected card and Lifetime Chart on the Payments Summary Dashboard.

  • All three charts are informational and cannot be edited or customized.

  • The charts are available to practices with PbN Payments enabled.

  • The charts provide a visual breakdown of collected revenue and should be used alongside other Payments Dashboard metrics for a complete view of payment performance.
