Identifying Trends in Your Dental Practice

Written by Emily McClendon

Practice by Numbers helps you identify trends across your practice by providing historical data for many KPIs. Historical performance is displayed in interactive bar graphs with up to 2.5 years of data, making it easier to monitor changes over time and spot patterns in your practice’s performance.

Accessing KPI History Graphs

To view a KPI’s historical graph:

  1. Hover your cursor over a KPI tile.

  2. A secondary set of three dots will appear in the upper-right corner of the KPI.

  3. Click the three dots.

  4. Select History.

These history graphs provide valuable insight into how your KPIs change over time and can help you better understand operational trends within your practice.

Using History Graphs to Analyze Trends

When reviewing historical graphs, look for:

  • Consistent increases or decreases

  • Sudden spikes or drops

  • Seasonal patterns

  • Long-term trends

  • Performance changes after operational adjustments

Comparing KPI trends with what was happening in the office at that time can help uncover the reasons behind performance changes and support better decision-making.

Features Available in History Graphs

History graphs include several tools that help you analyze KPI performance more effectively.

Trendline

Select the graph icon in the upper-right corner of the history graph and enable Trendline to display a trend line over the bar graph.

Trendlines help you quickly identify whether a KPI is generally trending upward or downward over time.

Trendline Example

Average Line

Enable the Average option to display an average line across the graph.

This feature helps you identify:

  • Data points significantly above or below average

  • Sudden changes in performance

  • Gradual shifts are maintained over time

Analyzing these patterns can help determine what operational changes influenced performance.

Average Example

Year-Over-Year Change

Enable Year-Over-Year Change to display a dotted line representing the percentage change compared to the same month in the previous year.

This allows you to compare current performance against historical seasonal trends and evaluate year-over-year growth or decline.
